Bolted joints
Alongside welded structures, bolted joints are the most widely used way of connecting components.
Analytical design of bolted joints is only possible for very simple joint geometries and loads. Such simple geometries are rare in real applications, so sizing is only possible with simplifications and assumptions.
As an alternative to purely analytical design, finite element analysis allows almost any multi-bolt joint to be analysed. The bolts are included in the analysis model — with bolt preload where applicable — and assessed on the basis of the resulting forces and moments.
Based on the calculated forces and moments, the strength verification is normally carried out to an applicable code — VDI 2230 or EN 1993 (Eurocode), for example — for the various load cases. This may be a
- static strength verification
- finite-life fatigue verification
- verification of safety against fatigue fracture
Our own bolt analysis software to VDI 2230, "MagicBOLT", enables us and our clients to carry out a VDI 2230 strength verification for the analysed bolts with the greatest of ease — efficiently, economically and in compliance with the code.
